Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin said Friday that he and senior GOP lawmakers will attempt to draft a targeted stimulus package with Democrats in the coming weeks. Mnuchin explained that he and White House chief of staff Mark Meadows met yesterday on Friday with Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., and House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy, R-Calif., to brainstorm ideas for a more-targeted relief package. Mnuchin, who with Meadows has led President Donald Trump’s stimulus discussions for months, expressed some optimism that House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., and Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, , may be more open to a compromise now that the 2020 elections are over than before. Mnuchin said that, “I can tell you Mark Meadows and I spoke with Mitch McConnell and Kevin McCarthy, and came up with a plan to sit down with Pelosi and Schumer and try to get a targeted bill done for the people that really need it and they hope democrats will compromise

In addition to this Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin on Thursday said he would not extend most of the emergency lending programs run in with the Federal Reserve, a move the central bank immediately criticized, and he also requested that unspent money allocated to the Fed under the first stimulus effort, the Cares Act, be reallocated by Congress. We don't need this money to buy corporate bonds. We need this money to go help small businesses that are still closed or hurt, no fault of their own," he said. "Or people who are gonna be on unemployment that's running out."

Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell issued a statement on Friday afternoon supporting Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin's call for Congress to repurpose unspent stimulus money — and backing the Trump administration in its extraordinary clash against the Federal Reserve. McConnell said how he agrees with Mnuchin to not extend five Fed emergency lending programs offering credit to businesses, cities, and states past December 31. He said "there is an obvious right use" for the unused funds which were part of the measures passed earlier this year. And argued it should be directed at "urgent, important, and targeted relief measures" that Republicans have sought for months over repeated Democratic objections they are not enough to stem the hardship among people and many sectors of the economy.

So, earlier this week Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell announced that the Senate would be leaving for a Thanksgiving recess and this was met with a lot of pushback. Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez () came out yesterday on Friday and criticized Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) for granting the Senate a Thanksgiving recess without striking a deal on new stimulus relief legislation. Ocasio-Cortez made the remarks while speaking during a House hearing on Friday and she said that McConnell was "abandoning our people" by allowing the Senate to go on a break on Wednesday, a day earlier than had been expected, while millions of Americans face the "extraordinary health and economic hardship of the pandemic."
