Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) and Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin spoke by phone for 36 minutes on Tuesday afternoon, after the Treasury secretary testified before the House select committee overseeing the crisis. After Mnuchin had the hearing with a House Subcommittee and during this hearing he said that he was ready to pass a deal now and that he would call Nancy Pelosi immediately to discus the second stimulus package once the hearing was over. Mnuchin expressed his hopes for a bipartisan agreement at a meeting of the House select subcommittee on the coronavirus crisis, insisting he was willing to negotiate the matter "with no conditions whatsoever any time. He simply said how “the president and I want to move forward” and get a deal” and that they would be willing to come up even more to $ He explained how “what is most important is that we deliver some relief quickly to the American workers impacted by this.”

On the phone call after the hearing, Pelosi expressed concerns about the secretary’s proposal "saying, ‘let's do a little now and a little later because she argued that economists demand more now.” Sadly, she explained that “this phone call made clear that Democrats and the White House continue to have serious differences understanding the gravity of the situation that America's working families are facing.” Pelosi reiterated that she thinks the pared-down proposals from the White House and Senate Republicans don't go nearly far enough in addressing the coronavirus crisis. Pelosi defended her $ price tag for the bill by saying “Does the White House think that America’s working families are not worth the investment needed to defeat the virus and the accompanying economic crisis? Or would they rather spend the money another way?” Mnuchin said that both he and President Trump support more aid for workers, schools, small businesses and testing. He goes on to say that “I very much agree with you and those other experts that more fiscal response is needed. The president and I want to move forward with more fiscal response,” but that a $ package is too much and they would only be willing to Come up to $

Good news is the Senate is planning to vote and hopefully pass a new bill when they get back from the august recess next week. Sen. John Barrasso, the No. 3 Senate GOP leader, told reporters Tuesday morning that the Senate GOP plans to hold a procedural vote to take up the pared-down stimulus plan that Republican senators have developed over the August recess. He called that bill a "focused, targeted solution" and said: "That's the goal -- is to come back and vote to move to that." He said that they created a bill with a focused, targeted solution that we hope that the House would pass and the House would agree to.” Barrasso said the legislation is “focused on getting people back to work, getting kids back to school.” Last week Republican officials told CNBC this limited stimulus package would include enhanced unemployment benefits, funding for schools, Paycheck Protection Program loans, and funding for a vaccine and testing. It would initially exclude a second round of stimulus checks and state government funding but that they both agree on stimulus checks and would include them later on during negotiations.
